Visits to Roger Some practical information about visiting death row.
Numerous people having expressed the desire to visit Roger. First, Roger can only receive one visit from outside Texas per month. These are called «special visits».
Write to Roger a long time in advance. To inform him concerning the month you would like to visit him. Only write when you are SURE TO BE ABLE TO GO AT THE STATED PERIOD, because if you have to cancel at the last minute, that could well deprive him of having someone fill in your slot. Roger has a list of authorized visitors". These are people, whose names he has given to the prison administration. He can only have 10 names on the list, and the list is only updated every six months, in April and October. You have the right to see him for two four-hour periods two days running. (It is possible to visit for four days if you take the last two days of one month and the first two of the next month, but I would not suggest that for a first visit).
Check with the US embassy of your country if your passport necessitates a visa or not.
When you have Rogers OK, phone the prison at the beginning of the month preceding your visit. For instance, if you visit in October, phone very early September.
The prison phone number is: (00-1-936) 967-8082. Say I am phoning to fix a special visit with an inmate on death row". You will be given the employee in charge of visitors, and you will give Rogers name and number: 889. You will be told to phone back the next day to see if your visit is approved. THE PRISON DOES NOT DELIVER ANY PAPER CONFIRMING YOUR VISIT!
Be sure to reach the prison just before eight. You can only enter the prison with your passport, airline ticket (to confirm you are leaving the country afterwards) and $ 20 in quarters to purchase lunch for Roger. You cannot take any other money, (not even foreign exchange), nor any paper, no pencil or pen, and only your car or house keys. You cannot take any presents for Roger.
The closest airport is the George W. Bush international airport in Houston, Texas. To go from the airport to Livingston, there are three possibilities:
Rent a cab (about $100-110). If you take a cab, be sure to tell the driver to take Highway 59 North.
Take the Greyhound bus. Rather inconvenient, although cheaper, because you have to first go into town ($45 by cab) and there are not many trips per day.
Rent your own car. This is the best solution, because that will avoid taking cabs in Livingston to go to the prison and back. Car rental is very cheap.
TAXI DRIVER IN LIVINGSTON: if you need a taxi when in Livingston, Texas, or driving back to the airport, try and make an appointment with Patricia Scott. Pat must be the loveliest Afro-American Southern Baptist taxi driver alive. She drove me down to Houston in January, and is a highly spiritual person. We have been in contact ever since. Her one-cab taxi company is called Praise Cab Company. Her cell phone is: (936) 223-9280. You will enjoy every minute in her uplifting company.
Otherwise you can call: Livingston 350 cab (936) 328-8181 or 967-0782
LODGING: there are hotels in Livingston, but quite far from the prison. There is a Holiday Inn closer by (936-327-9600), and especially the Super-8 hotel (much cheaper and just next to a Wal-Mart supermarket open 24 hours, 7 days a week, which the taxi driver can locate easily) Contact at: 936-327-2451 - www.lodgingus.com/TX/Livingston/econolodge
You will also find a friendly B&B with Christa Haber, who was married to a death row inmate (since then executed), which is within walking distance from the prison (45min), and very reasonable. But you will need a portable that functions in the USA, or then a car, because it is very isolated (3 rooms): christa@showlifetex.us
